Tarama Village is a small island community just a short flight by small plane from Miyako Island. Known as one of Okinawa’s leading producers of kokutō, the region’s distinctive brown sugar, Tarama’s daily life is deeply connected to this ingredient, as well as to small black soybeans known locally as sasage.

About a 20-minute drive from Tarama Airport, a colorful, mural-covered building suddenly comes into view in a quiet residential area. This is Sumamunu Tarama, a multi-purpose facility operated by the local tourism association. Bringing together a tourist information center, specialty shop, coworking space, and dining area, it functions like the island’s living room—warmly welcoming both residents and travelers.

One dish you’ll want to try here is the Brown Sugar Pork Soki Vegetable Curry, featuring pork soki (Okinawan-style braised pork cartilage) slowly simmered with kokutō and topped generously with island vegetables. The rich curry is layered with the mellow sweetness of brown sugar, making it a filling yet surprisingly light dish—perfect for recharging during your journey.

As you drive around the island, you may notice curious-looking fruit hanging in the fields. This is noni, sometimes referred to as a “miracle fruit.” Known for its distinctive aroma and flavor, noni is also a nutrient-rich superfruit containing amino acids and polyphenols. At Sumamunu Tarama, noni is made approachable in their original Brown Sugar Noni Milk, where the depth of kokutō syrup and the softness of milk gently round out its character. Many first-time tasters are pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to drink. For those feeling more adventurous, a 100% noni juice “Noni Shot” is also available.

For dessert, try the gelato generously mixed with island-grown black soybeans (sasage). With each spoonful, more beans appear, filling your mouth with the gentle sweetness of brown sugar and the fluffy, satisfying texture of the beans.

Whether you stop in before heading out on a drive or pause here to unwind after a day of sightseeing, Sumamunu Tarama is a place you’ll want to return to again and again. Brown sugar, black soybeans, and noni—simple island ingredients given a playful twist—come together in Tarama-style dishes and drinks that offer an unforgettable taste experience, more than worth the journey beyond Miyako Island.

Tarama Village lies roughly halfway between Miyako Island and Ishigaki Island and encompasses the remote islands of Tarama and Minna. Vast sugarcane fields spread across the landscape, producing Tarama-grown kokutō—the highest-yielding brown sugar in Okinawa Prefecture—and sustaining a way of life that remains deeply rooted in tradition.
Goats grazing freely in the fields and even along the main roads are a familiar sight. The island’s simple, rustic scenery gently invites you to slow down and savor the unhurried rhythm of island time.
