On Iriomote Island, a World Natural Heritage site of lush subtropical forests, winter brings a rare blessing you can taste only here: kamai, the island’s wild boar. Each year from November, when hunting season begins, kamai are taken from the forest after feeding on acorns and chinquapin nuts. With few domesticated pigs on the island, Iriomote is one of the rare places where a pure, unhybridized line of wild boar has been preserved. Locals affectionately call it kamai, a name said to reflect how delicious it is—even down to the skin.


太古の森が息づく世界自然遺産・西表島。この島で冬だけ味わえる特別な恵みが、野生のイノシシ「カマイ」です。毎年11月、解禁とともに捕獲されるカマイは、島の森に実るどんぐりや椎の実を食べて育った純野生種。豚など家畜がほとんどいないため、交雑のない“純血のイノシシ”が残る、世界的にも稀少な地域です。皮まで旨いと言われる特徴から、地元では親しみを込めて「カマイ」と呼ばれています。

In the island’s northwest Sonai area, Ristorante Terra Iriomote welcomes just one party per day with Italian cuisine that blends the island’s gifts with flavors from around the world. When the winter hunting ban is lifted, guests can request a special menu built around kamai, black rice, and island mountain vegetables.


島の北西部・祖納にある「リストランテ・テラ・イリオモテ」では、島の恵みと世界のエッセンスを融合させた、1日1組限定のイタリアンを提供。禁猟が明ける冬には、リクエストに応じて“カマイ × 黒米 × 島の山菜”を掛け合わせた特別なメニューが用意されます。

The dish highlights lean kamai meat with a clean, pleasantly gamey richness, along with a springy, flavorful layer of skin. Local wild greens such as ootani-watari fern and hobikanju leaves add a savory lift, letting each ingredient keep its character while coming together in a single, deeply satisfying bite—like tasting the forest itself.


筋肉質で臭みのないカマイの赤身、コリッとした皮の食感。そこへ、地元の山菜(オオタニワタリやホウビカンジュ)の塩味が加わると、それぞれの個性がひと口の中で調和し、森の豊かさが舌の上に広がる唯一の一皿に。

Supporting these dishes is Ohama Farm, located not far from the restaurant. For more than 400 years, it has carried on Iriomote’s rice-growing culture, cultivating black rice and other heirloom varieties without pesticides. Together with its free-range eggs, the farm forms part of the backbone of the island’s food culture.
