Savor Okinawa’s Spring :
Asa and a Bakery Café

Set on gentle hills overlooking Nakagusuku Bay, Kitanakagusuku Village is known as the castle town of the World Heritage Site Nakagusuku Castle Ruins. With its calm sea and orderly streets, it is a place of quiet, scenic charm. In the stillness of morning, asa was once harvested from these waters.

Asa, a seaweed known locally as hitoegusa, has long been part of Okinawan food culture. Loved for its delicate texture and fresh, ocean-like flavor, it appears in everyday dishes such as miso soup and tempura. Kitanakagusuku Village is also known as one of its producing areas.

The harvest season typically comes around March. During this time, vivid green spreads across the calm sea—a quiet sign that spring has arrived in Okinawa.

One place to enjoy bread made with asa is Brownman’s Bakery & Café, located in Kitanakagusuku’s former foreign-housing district. Here, you can try their “Asa and Sea Salt Rustic,” a crusty country-style loaf kneaded with domestically produced asa. As you break into the bread, a gentle aroma of seaweed rises from within. Paired with coffee or another drink, its flavor becomes even more inviting.

*The bakery uses asa produced in Japan. When supplies from Kitanakagusuku are limited, asa from other parts of Okinawa Prefecture or from Kagoshima Prefecture is used.

This café is also known for its breakfast menu, drawing visitors from early in the morning. Wrapped in the aroma of freshly baked bread, guests take their time and ease gently into the day.

Inside, a wide selection of sandwich plates awaits. On this visit, I chose the Prosciutto, Blue Cheese, and Dried Fig Sandwich. Vegan options are available as well. Set within a renovated former foreign residence, the café offers a relaxed setting where you can enjoy your meal at an unhurried pace.

Takeout is also available. Drinks and menu items that make it hard to choose just one can be taken to go, to enjoy wherever you like.In Kitanakagusuku, a hilltop village watched over by castle ruins, the flavor of asa—nurtured by the sea—lingers quietly in memory, together with the scenery and everyday life of this place.
