Okinawa City is the second-largest city in the prefecture after Naha.
Here, Okinawan, American, and many other cultures have naturally blended over time, nurturing a distinctive “champuru” culture. You can taste that character in its food as well: walk through the streets and you’ll come across flavors you won’t find anywhere else.

Start with ZEBRA.Bagel in Miyazato, a popular local bagel shop. In the morning, rows of freshly baked bagels fill the cases, and customers line up to buy them by the bagful. Their KOZA Bagel is a truly champuru-style creation, combining indulgent, American-style guilty-pleasure richness with a wide variety of flavors. It now has fans across Japan, and its online gift boxes are especially popular.

Meanwhile, Wagashiya Shunpudo in Takahara is known for creative sweets that blend traditional Japanese confections with Okinawan ingredients. Its Japanese-style tiramisu layers mascarpone with Ryukyu cinnamon (karaki, Okinawan cinnamon), Shikuwasa (Okinawan citrus), and brown sugar. Each spoonful reveals multiple layers of flavor, making it a dessert to savor slowly. The shop’s dorayaki and yokan also feature Okinawan ingredients, and one of these sweets, with its deep, dignified look, has been named “Pride of the Samurai.”
